The sanctuary offers wide open pastures with large scale vistas of the hills climbing toward the sky across the river, trails descending toward steep densely wooded canyons to lush wet meadow besides the river or climbing up the other side to tall bluffs with spectacular views overlooking the Niobrara river valley. With a wet spring the pastures are filled with a magnificent variety of wild flowers and the continuous serenade of grassland birds including western meadowlark, lark sparrow, grasshopper sparrow and upland plover, with an occasional long billed curlew heard in the distance. To ride these pastures on a swift gaited horse is a trail riders dream.
