The Lazy Easy

The Lazy Easy Ranch House combines comfortable simplicity with a perfect setting for exploring the diverse habitats of the sanctuary, the nearby Niobrara River and the surrounding Sandhills. The house features four fully furnished bedrooms, two bathrooms, kitchen, and a large living and dining room, all of which exude warmth, relaxation and simple charm. Guests can unwind on the front porch swing, or enjoy the quiet and solitude provided by the surrounding groves of shady trees, shelterbelts of Cottonwood and Red Cedar, and nearby meadows and patches of grassy pasture. This accommodation perfect for families or groups to come and go from outdoor activities, as well as bicyclists, canoers, hunters who want to “put their feet up” in the evenings, or just those who want to enjoy a shady country retreat.

*Additional donations are always appreciated and helpful as we strive to maintain and improve the sanctuary for wildlife and prairie conservation purposes, and to provide nature appreciation educational opportunities.

Special rates may be available or tailored at certain times for educational groups, conservation partners, and AOK or “Friends of the Niobrara Sanctuary” members.  However, we wish to avoid offering rates that are less than or will in any way undercut the rates for lodging in nearby communities.  We strive for the sanctuary to be complementary to nearby rural communities by encouraging visitation to the area.

Persons working as volunteers on the sanctuary in various capacities may request special rates in appreciation for the skills and commensurate with the time they contribute.

Walking and hiking on the trails provided and similar “nature appreciation” activities are among the numerous amenities offered as part of the experience of staying on the Sanctuary at the Hutton House or the Lazy Easy Ranch House.  Pets are not allowed in the Hutton House and are not generally allowed in the Lazy Easy, however, special arrangements can be made for certain well-trained and well-mannered pets to enter the Lazy Easy Ranch House.  A damage and extra cleaning deposit would be required. All dogs must be on a lease everywhere on the Sanctuary except when in the residential yard and must always be under the strict control of the owner.

A corral with water and some grazing (or hay) is available, however, an additional daily fee is required to keep horses on the property and/or for riding on the designated trails and the scenic “minimum maintenance” country roads that extend across a major portion of the sanctuary. “Open range” riding is not generally available due to the need to minimize disturbance to prairie grouse and other grassland nesting birds (especially Long-billed Curlews and Bobolinks) during the nesting and brood-rearing season, as well as fawning areas for deer and other ecological considerations.

Arrangements for vehicle tours and transportation on the sanctuary, guide service including a leader on horseback for guests with horses, use of wildlife viewing and photography blinds, and similar activities are available and can be provided by sanctuary staff or others. Advance planning may be necessary, and modest fees may apply.
